Halloween
Everybody is mostly well known in the Unites States and it is celebrated as a holiday for younger children. What people do not know is that the roots follow all the way back to ancient religions and some traits of paganism. About 2,000 years ago the Celts lived in the UK, Northern France, and Ireland they would have a festival at the end of the year. Their New Year was November first and the festival was called Samhain (Sow-en). When the end of the year came that means it was the end of summer, the beginning of a long hard winter which would cause the deaths of many animals and the end of the harvesting season. Mostly livestock is killed and eaten during this time and because of that this signified death to the Pagan Celtics. They believed as the New Year came that the night before it there is a wall that is left open between the living and the dead, that allows spirits of the dead to minge among te living even, both bad and good spirits. Sometimes they thought that the spirits would take over the living, cause trouble or try to find a way to the after life.
For the people who celebrate Halloween today they wear costumes and go trick-or-treating because of the ld Medieval practices of "going a-souling" and "mumming". Mumming and going-a-souling is taking the from of wearing costumes, chanting, play-acting and causes mischief. Souling meant to go door to door to exchange prayers for treats such as "soul cakes".
